Onam 2027 is expected on Sunday, 12 September. It follows the lunar calendar, so the date moves every year and can differ by a day between regions.
Onam is Kerala’s harvest festival, welcoming home the legendary King Mahabali, whose reign was a golden age. Its main day, Thiruvonam, falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September) and closes ten days of celebration.
Homes lay out pookalam, carpets of flowers, and families sit down to the Onam sadya, a feast of more than twenty dishes served on a banana leaf. Snake-boat races, Pulikali tiger dances and new clothes complete the day.
